Vary Your Question Type for Better Surveys

Asking only yes” or “no” questions in your next survey will only get you so far. There are over 16 unique question types that can help you to get the answers you need.

The following are just a few of the question types that go beyond the closed-ended “yes” and “no” inquiries:

• Single answer: Respondents can only choose one answer.

• Multiple answer:
Respondents can choose from any or all of the answers.

• Open-ended text:
Respondents can type an answer in their own words. Length will vary according to the number of lines allowed.

• Matrix:
Rows of answers allow respondents to choose either one answer or multiple answers per category in either horizontal or vertical format.

• Rank order:
Respondents are asked to assign each answer in a category with a number value.
